VDOT continues work around the region

by | Jan 8, 2022 | Traffic

From VDOT:

Nearly all roads are now open and passable in the Fredericksburg area following this week’s winter storms, and Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews are focused Saturday on removing remaining debris, snow and ice form the most severely-impacted secondary routes to open all lanes.

Interstate 95, primary and high-volume secondary roads are clear. All roads are now open in Stafford and Spotsylvania counties, and one road is closed in Caroline and King George counties.

Roads marked as open and passable may still have a single lane closed due to debris, such as River Road in Spotsylvania. Motorists are advised to use caution in these areas, and watch for crews continuing to work along the road. VDOT crews will be hauling away debris, plowing the remaining snow and ice underneath, and applying sand and salt to address icing and improve motorist traction.

While roads in subdivisions are now passable, with bare pavement visible and isolated areas of snow and ice, additional final cleanup will be underway today as crews check that all roads have been reached. Residents concerned their street has been missed can call VDOT’s Customer Service Center at 1-800-FOR-ROAD (367-7623) or report it online at http://my.vdot.virginia.gov.

Residents and motorists may observe additional tree debris remaining in the state right of way, outside of travel lanes. Crews have prioritized removing downed trees and debris from the travel lanes to reopen roads and restore connectivity, and are currently organizing the follow-up effort to remove the remaining debris from roadsides.

Motorists are urged to continue to use caution if traveling. With temperatures near-freezing, and expected to drop below freezing Saturday night, any moisture from melted snow and ice during the day on cleared routes may refreeze. VDOT crews will continue to apply sand and salt overnight and Sunday morning to address potential icing, and respond to any reports of hazardous road conditions.
