A winter storm is anticipated to bring several inches of snow accumulation to the eastern edge of the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula starting Friday night, and Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews are ready to plow snow and apply treatment materials in response to any hazardous road conditions that develop.
The heaviest snowfall is anticipated east of the Tappahannock area and Route 360. Snow is forecast to begin during the early evening, and continue through early Saturday morning.
Motorists are urged to not travel during the storm, while snow is falling, and remain off the roads until they are passable. Travel is hazardous when ice or snow is present on the road. Roads may become very slippery once precipitation begins falling.
This afternoon, VDOT crews are mobilizing in the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula regions to have snowplows staged and trucks equipped for spreading materials when the storm arrives this evening.
Crews will work overnight through the storm to keep primary roads such as Route 3, Route 14, Route 17, Route 30, Route 198, Route 200, Route 202, Route 203, Route 223, and Route 360 passable, as well high-volume secondary roads that connect with vital emergency and public facilities.
Once road conditions improve on primary and critical routes, snowplows can make progress clearing lower-volume roads and subdivision streets in residential areas.
While a precise time estimate cannot be provided for a plow to arrive on a specific road, VDOT’s emergency response will continue into the weekend, 24 hours a day, until all roads have been reached and are safe for travel.
Ferry Service
Service has been suspended on the Merry Point Ferry in Lancaster County and the Sunnybank Ferry in Northumberland County through Monday, Jan. 24. Ferry service will be evaluated on Monday morning based on weather conditions.
