Plastic bag tax reminders for area residents and businesses

by | Jan 22, 2022 | Government

From the City of Fredericksburg:

The City of Fredericksburg implemented a five-cent tax on single-use disposable plastic bags, effective January 1st, 2022, in accordance with state law.  The Virginia Department of Taxation administers the tax, and has produced guidelines as to who should charge the tax and how the funds may be used.

As a reminder, only businesses that are located within the City limits (22401 zip code) are affected by the new tax.  In addition, the tax applies only to three types of businesses within the City – grocery stores, convenience stores, and pharmacies.  Other types of stores, such as restaurants, clothing stores, or home supply stores, are not included in the tax.

By adopting the Plastic Bag Tax, the Fredericksburg City Council’s main goal is to reduce the amount of plastic waste in the environment to preserve a green, clean environment in Fredericksburg.
