The new permanent ramp from Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road) South to I-66 West is planned to open during the early morning hours on or about Tuesday, April 19. The current temporary left turn and connector ramp from Route 123 South to I-66 West will close as part of this work. The Route 123 Interchange is being rebuilt as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.
Starting on or about the early morning hours of Tuesday, April 19, drivers should expect the following traffic change pattern, weather permitting:
Ramp from Route 123 South to I-66 West
- The new permanent ramp will open on the right side of the roadway near the previous ramp’s location (see graphic below).
Drivers on Route 123 South will no longer be able to make a left turn at the traffic signal to reach I-66 West.
To implement the change, drivers should expect the following:
Monday, April 18
I-66 West at Route 123
- Three lanes will be closed from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. for crews to implement the traffic shift.
- All lanes will open by 5 a.m.
Route 123 South from Rose Forest Drive to I-66
- The right lane will be closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. for crews to implement the new ramp opening.
- All lanes will open by 5 a.m.
Route 123 North at I-66
- The left lane will be closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. for crews to implement the new ramp opening.
- All lanes will open by 5 a.m.
All work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled to Tuesday night, April 19, if inclement conditions occur.
When complete, the reconstructed Route 123/I-66 Interchange will provide direct access to and from the new Express Lanes for both eastbound and westbound travelers. A new shared-use path through the interchange will provide connection between the new I-66 corridor trail and planned trails in the City of Fairfax.
