Travel impacts on I-66 West between Gainesville and Centreville, for I-66 Express Lanes paving

by | Jul 13, 2022 | Traffic

Drivers should expect possible delays on I-66 West due to an extended closure of the left lane between Route 29 (Lee Highway) in Gainesville and Route 29 in Centreville beginning on or about Wednesday night, July 13. This section of westbound I-66 will be reduced to three travel lanes with the left lane (HOV lane) closed around-the-clock for approximately six days. Additional lane closures will occur in this area during the overnight hours. These lane closures will allow crews to complete this section of roadway paving for the future I-66 Express Lanes Outside the Beltway Project. Extending the single lane closure for multiple days will enable crews to work more efficiently, reducing traffic impacts from additional paving during the coming months.

Drivers traveling on I-66 East during this time should plan ahead, expect delays, and consider adjusting travel plans and/or routes if possible. All work is weather dependent and schedules may be adjusted if inclement conditions occur.

What Drivers Should Expect:

Wednesday, July 13, through Monday, July 18

I-66 East between Route 29 Gainesville and Route 29 Centreville

  • Starting at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 13, the left lane of I-66 West will be closed at Route 234 Business (Sudley Road) in Manassas. Crews will work their way west toward Route 29 in Gainesville, closing additional portions of the left lane as paving operations advance.
  • Starting at 9 p.m. Friday, July 15, the left lane of I-66 West will be closed near Route 29 in Centreville and crews will progress westward to Route 234 Business in Manassas over approximately four days.
  • Three travel lanes will remain open during peak periods.
  • Two additional travel lanes will be closed nightly between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., leaving one travel lane open.
  • The left lane closure will remain in place around-the-clock once set until the end of the paving operation.

The Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project will provide new travel choices and congestion relief across a 22.5-mile stretch of I-66 from Route 29 in Gainesville to the I-495 Interchange. Improvements include new Express Lanes, more than 4,000 new park-and-ride spaces with convenient access to the Express Lanes, new and improved bus service and transit routes, interchange improvements, and 11 miles of new bike and pedestrian trails.
