Spotsy man charged after victim with gunshot wound found in burning house

The Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office says a county man has been charged with murder after a fire last week where a man was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head.

On 07/29/2022 at 1:49PM, the Spotsylvania 911 Center received a call reporting a house fire in the 7500 block of Grand Brooks Road.  First arriving Fire/Rescue and Law Enforcement units found the home fully engulfed in flames.  Subsequent investigation found a deceased adult male victim located in the home.  Detectives and Fire Marshall Investigators determined the death to be suspicious in nature.

The body was transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Richmond, Virginia for identification and autopsy.  The autopsy revealed that the victim died of a single gunshot wound to the upper body.   During the investigation, Detectives learned that the vehicle registered to the homeowner was located the same day in Louisa County at 12:30PM.   The vehicle appeared to have been in an accident and was set on fire.

Detectives develop a person of interest over the weekend and conducted several interviews and surveillance.  This person had outstanding probation violation warrants on file.  On 8/03/2022 at 0930AM Detectives executed a search warrant at a residence in the 7600 block of Grand Brooks Rd.  The suspect barricaded himself in the home for a short time before he ran out of the residence in an attempt to escape.

His efforts were unsuccessful and he was taken into custody without further incident.  John Christopher Brown, thirty-seven years of age from Spotsylvania was arrested for Murder in the 2nd degree, Arson and Grand Larceny Auto.  He was incarcerated in the Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond.  The positive identification of the victim is pending the Medical Examiner’s investigation.
