The Stafford Sheriff’s Office says an off-duty Fairfax County detective was arrested Friday for DUI while operating his unmarked police vehicle.
Major Shawn Kimmitz says 12:24 a.m. Deputy J.D. Hurt observed a Ford Fusion disregard a red traffic signal, nearly causing an accident, at the intersection of Courthouse Road and Hospital Center Boulevard. A traffic stop was conducted and the driver was identified as 57-year-old Stephen Copp.  Deputy Hurt determined Copp was an off-duty detective with the Fairfax County Police Department and was operating his unmarked law enforcement vehicle.
Copp had bloodshot, glassy eyes and an odor of alcoholic beverage on his breath. He was charged with DUI and the traffic signal violation and the magistrate released him on an unsecured bond. The vehicle was released to the Fairfax County Police Department and they have placed Copp on administrative leave pending an internal affairs investigation.
