The Fredericksburg SPCA received 26 canines and 17 felines from Florida to provide aid in response to Hurricane Ian. In partnership with the Humane Society of the United States, the Fred SPCA was onsite at Richmond International Airport to welcome a Greater Good flight last Friday–October 14th.
“The animals we are receiving are homeless animals from Florida shelters who were already looking for a home,” says Carrie Withers, Executive Director of the Fredericksburg SPCA. “Clearing space in Florida shelters will enable those animal welfare organizations to help the influx of displaced animals coming in their doors. They can concentrate on intaking those animals and reuniting them with their families.”
In response to the devastation of both Hurricane Ian and Hurricane Fiona, the Fredericksburg SPCA has already welcomed 30 animals from Puerto Rico and Florida. The shelter remains at capacity with its existing foster base. There is an urgent call to action for the community to provide assistance at this time.
Appointments for both fostering and adopting are encouraged at this time. Foster families are offered the first chance at adoption if they find an animal that is a good match for their lifestyle.
