I-95 Northbound

Exit 133 (Falmouth/Warrenton) Off-Ramp Closure

Wednesday – Thursday, midnight – 3 a.m. Early Wednesday and Thursday mornings, the I-95 northbound off-ramp at exit 133 (Falmouth/Warrenton) to access Route 17 will close for pavement repairs following a recent truck fire. Drivers will be detoured to continue on I-95 northbound then use the off-ramp at Exit 136 (Centreport Parkway) to southbound Route 1.

I-95 Southbound

Exit 143 (Aquia/Garrisonville)

Monday – Friday, 9 p.m. – 10 a.m. Right lane closure scheduled at mile markers 143-141. Construction for the 95 Express Lanes Fredericksburg Extension project.

Stafford County

Route 3

Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Lane closures and shoulder closures for utility work between Dairy Lane and Rumford Road.

 

Route 17 Northbound

Sunday – Friday, 7 p.m. – 6 a.m. Alternating single lane closures between Sanford Drive and Short Street for the I-95 Northbound Rappahannock River Crossing project.

 

Route 17 Southbound

Sunday – Friday, 8 p.m. – 7 a.m. Alternating single lane closures between Sanford Drive and Short Street for the I-95 Northbound Rappahannock River Crossing project.

Route 17 Northbound and Southbound Full Traffic Stops

Sunday – Friday, Midnight – 3 a.m. Full traffic stops for up to 30-minute intervals for demolition of a Route 17 overpass. Construction for the I-95 Northbound Rappahannock River Crossing project.

Route 17 Business (Warrenton Road)

Thursday – Sunday, 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. Alternating single lane closures between Heartfields Lane and Washington Street. Crews will drill holes in asphalt and fill them with grout to address a void underneath the pavement, near a previously deteriorated drainage pipe. The drainage pipe has been replaced. Work will continue daily into week of Sunday, Jan. 22-Saturday, Jan. 28, weather permitting.

Centreport Parkway

Tuesday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. Guardrail repair near Mountain View Road. Flaggers may be present to direct drivers through the work zone.

Courthouse Road

Thursday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. Guardrail repair. Single lane closure near the I-95 southbound entrance ramp.

Route 610 (Garrisonville Road)

Wednesday – Thursday,  7 p.m. – 5 a.m. Right lane closure on westbound Garrisonville Road between Worth Connector Avenue and Dunn Drive for water line work under permit.

Route 614 (Cropp Road)

Tuesday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. Guardrail repair. Flaggers will alternate one-way traffic through the work zone on Cropp Road near Alcotti Run.

Spotsylvania County

Route 2 (Tidewater Trail)

Monday – Friday,  24 hours a day. Right shoulder closure on Route 2 between Mine Road and Bowman Drive for turn lane construction under permit.

Route 3 Eastbound at Brock Road

Wednesday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. Guardrail repair. Single lane closure on Route 3 eastbound near Brock Road.

 

Route 208 (Courthouse Road)

Monday – Wednesday,  9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Right lane closure on eastbound Route 208 between Hood Drive and Route 1 for turn lane construction under permit.

Route 601 (Lawyers Road) and Route 608 (Massaponax Church Road)

Monday, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Pavement markings. Flaggers will direct traffic through the intersection.

Route 639 (Leavells Road)

Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Right shoulder closure on Leavells Road between Harrison Road and Salem Station Boulevard for turn lane construction under permit.

Route 649 (Mill Pond Road)

Wednesday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. Guardrail repair. Flaggers will alternate one-way traffic through the work zone on Mill Pond Road near the Po River.

 

Route 672 (Hall Industrial Drive)

Tuesday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. Road repair. Flaggers will alternate one-way traffic through the work zone on Hall Industrial Drive near Massaponax Church Road.

Caroline County

Route 1 Northbound

Tuesday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Survey and pipe work on Route 1 with single lane closures near the Ladysmith Center Shopping Mall and Collins Boulevard.

 

Route 30

Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. Guardrail repair near Route 652. Flaggers may be present to direct drivers through the work zone.

Route 301 Northbound and Southbound

Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. Guardrail repair. Single lane closures at various locations.

Route 606

Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. Guardrail repair. Flaggers will alternate one-way traffic through the work zone on westbound Route 606 near Route 632.

 

Route 639 (Ladysmith Road)

Tuesday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Motorists should be alert for travel lane shift and construction work along the shoulder near Green Street and Allen Street.

Route 658

Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. Guardrail repair. Flaggers will alternate one-way traffic through the work zone on eastbound Route 658 near Route 1.

Essex County

Route 619 and Route 618

Monday, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. A flagging crew will direct drivers through the intersection for sign work.

King and Queen County

Route 721 and Route 619

Monday, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. A flagging crew will direct drivers through the intersection for sign work.

 

King William County

 

Route 360 and Route 605

Monday, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. A flagging crew will direct drivers through the intersection for sign work.

 

Route 611 and Route 1203

Monday, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. A flagging crew will direct drivers through the intersection for sign work.

Westmoreland County

Route 658 (Monroe Bay Circle) Road Closure

Monroe Bay Circle is closed to traffic until further notice due to a hole that formed in the road from a pipe failure over the crossing of Monroe Creek. The detour route is signed. Follow Route 1300 (Shore Drive) to Route 1308 (Rolando Drive) to Route 633 (Holly Vista Drive) then to Route 628 (Stoney Knoll). VDOT is currently assessing the damage, reviewing plans, and determining costs to determine if a temporary repair to reopen the roadway is feasible. While a long-term project to install a concrete double-box culvert is in the design phase, VDOT is working on advancing the project schedule. The project page will continue to be updated as the project moves forward.

Additional Projects in Fredericksburg District

 

Caroline County

Route 639 (Ladysmith Road) Widening

Construction is underway to widen Route 639 (Ladysmith Road) to four travel lanes between I-95 and just west of Route 1. A new raised median will separate eastbound and westbound travel lanes to allow for improved movement through the corridor. Additional left and right turn lanes will be built on Ladysmith Road at the Route 1 intersection. A shared use path, sidewalks, crosswalks, and pedestrian crossing equipment will be installed. The project is expected to be complete in May 2024.

 

Route 652 (Cool Water Drive) over Polecat Creek

Cool Water Drive was closed to through traffic in March 2022 at the bridge over Polecat Creek, and will remain closed for a bridge replacement project. Significant deterioration was discovered in key bridge elements during a bridge inspection and VDOT closed the bridge for motorist safety. Motorists should follow signs posted along the recommended detour route. Construction is underway. The bridge is estimated to open to traffic in late August 2023.

Essex County

Route 612 (Bestland Road) Bridge Replacement Project

On Monday, Jan. 23, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will close a portion of Route 612 (Bestland Road) in Essex County for approximately five months to replace a bridge over Dragon Run. The project will replace the current structurally deficient, steel beam timber deck bridge with a new 48-foot concrete slab structure on concrete abutments and concrete piles. Click here to view an online detour map.

Construction activity will be underway from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays.

King George County

Route 301 and the Nice-Middleton Bridge Replacement Project

The new Nice-Middleton Bridge is now open to traffic over the Potomac River. Road work continues on Route 301 near the approaches. Read MDTA’s release here.

Mathews County

 

Route 223 (Old Ferry Road) over Milford Haven at Gwynn’s Island

Temporary traffic signals are installed on Route 223 at each approach to the bridge over Milford Haven. One-way, alternating traffic will remain in place, controlled by the temporary signals, through April 2023 due to a bridge maintenance project. Bridge openings for marine traffic are suspended through April 2023.

Northumberland County

 

Route 605 (Balls Neck Road)

Balls Neck Road is closed to traffic at the bridge over Mill Creek for bridge repair. The portion of the road will remain closed for approximately three months. Click here to view online detour map.

Richmond County

Route 637 (County Bridge Road)

County Bridge Road is closed to through traffic at the bridge over Cat Point Creek due to damage following heavy rain and flooding in summer 2021. The bridge replacement is under construction. County Bridge Road will remain closed to through traffic during construction, until the new bridge reopens by April 26, 2024.

Spotsylvania County

Route 1 and Commonwealth Drive

Be alert for construction activity on Route 1 near the Commonwealth Drive intersection, where work is underway to build a nearly 700-space Park & Ride commuter lot. Be alert for work zone barriers along the shoulders of Route 1, and lanes that are shifted to the east near the Commonwealth Drive intersection. Project completion is anticipated in May 2023.

 

Route 17 Overpass Replacement and Widening

Construction started in December 2020 on a project to replace the existing two-lane interstate overpass on Route 17 with a four-lane bridge. Route 17 will be widened to four travel lanes to just east of the Hospital Boulevard/Germanna Point Drive intersection. Sidewalk, a shared-use path, and pedestrian crossing equipment will be added as part of the project. Improvements will be completed in Feb. 2024.
