LISTEN: Dahlgren’s Innovation Challenge: Big money, important results

by | Jan 19, 2023 | Military, Schools & Education

What would you or your Institution of Higher Education (IHE) do with up to $100,000?

Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division has designed an Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML)
Innovation Challenge at Dahlgren with a prize purse of $100,000, which could be split by a percentage to team members
or to the IHE. The breakdown – 1st place is $50,000, 2nd place is $30,000 and 3rd place is $20,000.

How do you win? Develop AI and ML algorithms for the automated scheduling and coordination of simulated directed
energy, hypervelocity projectiles and other advanced weapon systems. The challenge is split into two phases – small
white paper and in-person event.

Gather a team of five members or less and submit a paper. Your entry must articulate why your team wants to
participate in the challenge and why the team believes they will develop an AI/ML algorithmic solution that will best
meet the objectives. The criteria are:
1. Describe the specific AI/ML experience of the team in algorithm design development and application. Examples of
previous developments and projects are strongly encouraged.
2. Describe the benefits of the team’s participation in the challenge and how each member plans to use this experience
in their future academic and/or career endeavors.

IHEs are encouraged to submit multiple teams. The deadline for the paper is Jan. 30, 2023. Evaluation of Phase 1
submissions is scheduled to take place Jan. 31, 2023 with an anticipated announcement of the winners Feb. 1, 2023. Up
to 25 teams will be selected to compete in person March 2-4, 2023 at the University of Mary Washington Dahlgren
Campus.

We talked about the Innovation Challenge with Dahlgren’s Dr. George Foster, Distinguished Engineer for Combat Control.
