Working around the clock: Stafford utilities

From Stafford County government:

Have you ever thought about what you would do if you turned on the tap and no water was available?  Water plays a vital role in our daily lives that we often take for granted. It is a basic necessity for both health and hygiene. Hundreds of industries also depend on water such as restaurants, hospitals, firefighters, farms and breweries. There is a great deal that goes into bringing water to and from homes and businesses every day. Stafford County Utilities makes sure everyone receives a high-quality product every day.

The hard-working men and women at Stafford County Utilities work through holidays and extreme weather, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. “The Utilities department works around the clock to ensure the availability of clean drinking water and safe and reliable sewer services for our customers,” said Stafford County Director of Utilities Chris Edwards. “Our staff takes pride in their work and strives for excellence in all that they do.”

To provide high-quality and clean drinking water, Stafford County uses advanced technologies and practices in the drinking-water treatment process. When you turn on your tap, you can rest assured that the water you drink meets all regulations for safety. Stafford’s water system is monitored and maintained by our team of highly skilled operators, engineers, technical experts and administrative staff to ensure our drinking water meets or exceeds every state and federal requirement that safeguards public health.

Water is a limited resource. Less than one percent of earth’s water is fresh and can be used as drinking water. The Department of Utilities provides nearly 10 million gallons of water per day, through more than 700 miles of water line in Stafford County. This requires the department to treat almost four billion gallons of drinking water annually at Stafford County’s two Water Treatment Facilities, Lake Mooney and Smith Lake.

Next time you get a glass of water to drink from your tap, know that the men and women of Stafford County Utilities are hard at work, making that happen. To learn more about Stafford County Utilities, visit https://utilities.staffordcountyva.gov.
