Area road work this week

I-95 Southbound

Exit 148 (Quantico) to Exit 143 (Garrisonville Road)

Monday – Thursday, 9 p.m. – 10 a.m. Lane closure is scheduled at mile markers 148-146 for the 95 Express Lanes Fredericksburg Extension project.

 

Exit 143 (Garrisonville Road) to Exit 140 (Courthouse Road)

Monday – Thursday, 9 p.m. – 10 a.m. Single lane closure is scheduled at mile markers 143-141 for the 95 Express Lanes Fredericksburg Extension project.

Exit 140 (Courthouse Road) to Exit 133 (Route 17)

Monday – Thursday, 9 p.m. – 10 a.m. Lane closures are scheduled at mile markers 136-134 and Thursday, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m. at mile markers 140-138 for the 95 Express Lanes Fredericksburg Extension project.

  • 9 p.m. – Single lane closure
  • 10 p.m. – Double lane closure
  • Midnight – 3 a.m. Full traffic stops for up to 30-minute intervals
  • 4:30 a.m. – Two lanes open, single lane closure
  • 10 a.m. – All lanes open except on Friday when all lanes open at 6 a.m.

Exit 133 (Route 17) to Exit 130 (Route 3)

Sunday – Thursday, 9 p.m. – 10 a.m. Single lane closure is scheduled at mile markers 133-132 for I-95 Northbound Rappahannock River Crossing project construction.

Exit 126 (Massaponax)

Monday – Friday, 9 p.m. – 10 a.m. Mobile lane closures between I-95 off-ramp at Exit 126 and Route 1 for barrier wall and work zone sign installation. Early construction activities for the I-95 southbound off-ramp widening and Route 1 southbound widening project.

Exit 118 (Thornburg)

Sunday – Thursday, 9 p.m. – 5 a.m. Single lane closure at the bridge over Ni River, located at mile marker 121, for maintenance work at 9 p.m. followed by double lane closures at 10 p.m. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.

Stafford County

Route 1 and Corporate Drive

Wednesday, 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. Alternating lane closures at the intersection of Route 1 and Corporate Drive for signal work.

Route 3

Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Lane closures and shoulder closures for utility work between Dairy Lane and Rumford Road.

Route 212 (Chatham Heights Road)

Monday – Thursday, 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Alternating lane closures on Chatham Heights Road between Valley View Place and Chatham Street East for pavement repair work.

Spotsylvania County

Route 1 Northbound and Southbound

Monday – Friday, 7 p.m. – 7 a.m. Mobile alternating single and double lane closures between Hood Drive and Spotsylvania Parkway for barrier wall and work zone sign installation. Early construction activities for the I-95 southbound off-ramp widening and Route 1 southbound widening project.

Route 1 and Route 608 (Massaponax Church Road)

Wednesday, 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. Alternating lane closures at the intersection of Route 1 and Massaponax Church Road for signal work.

Route 208 (Courthouse Road)

Monday – Friday,  9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Right lane closure on eastbound Route 208 between Hood Drive and Route 1 for turn lane construction under permit.

Route 672 (Hall Industrial Drive)

Monday – Thursday, 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. Flaggers will alternate one-way traffic through the work zone on Route 672 for shoulder work.

Caroline County

 

Route 1 Northbound

Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Survey and pipe work on Route 1 with single lane closures near the Ladysmith Center Shopping Mall and Collins Boulevard.

 

Route 639 (Ladysmith Road)

Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Motorists should be alert for travel lane shift and construction work along the shoulder near Green Street and Allen Street.

 

Pavement Marker Lens Placement

Monday – Thursday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Mobile operation with brief lane closures. Flagging crew will direct traffic through the work zone along the following routes:

 

  • Route 1 Northbound and Southbound
  • Between Route 207 and Acorn Lane
  • Between Green Lane and Glenn Meadows
  • Route 2 between Mudd Tavern and Route 301

King George County

 

Route 301 Northbound and Southbound

Monday – Thursday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Mobile operation with shoulder lane closures on Route 301 between Barnhill Road and Roseland Road near the bridge approach to the new Nice Bridge for paving work.

Caroline County

Route 639 (Ladysmith Road) Widening

Construction is underway to widen Route 639 (Ladysmith Road) to four lanes between I-95 and just west of Route 1. A new raised median will separate eastbound and westbound lanes to allow for improved movement through the corridor. Additional left and right turn lanes will be built on Ladysmith Road at the Route 1 intersection. A shared use path, sidewalks, crosswalks, and pedestrian crossing equipment will be installed. The project is expected to be complete in May 2024.

 

Route 652 (Cool Water Drive) over Polecat Creek

Cool Water Drive closed to through traffic in March 2022 at the bridge over Polecat Creek due to significant deterioration in key bridge elements. Motorists should follow signs posted along the recommended detour route. Construction is underway. The new bridge is estimated to open to traffic in late August 2023.

Essex County

Route 612 (Bestland Road) Bridge Replacement Project

Route 612 (Bestland Road) is closed to through traffic through late June 2023 to replace a bridge over Dragon Run. The project is replacing the previous timber deck bridge with a new 48-foot concrete slab structure on concrete abutments and piles. Click here to view an online detour map.

King George County

Route 301 and the Nice-Middleton Bridge Replacement Project

The new Nice-Middleton Bridge is now open to traffic over the Potomac River. Road work continues on Route 301 near the approaches. Read MDTA’s release here.

Mathews County

 

Route 223 (Old Ferry Road) over Milford Haven at Gwynn’s Island

Temporary traffic signals are installed on Route 223 at each approach to the bridge over Milford Haven. One-way, alternating traffic will remain in place, controlled by the temporary signals, through April 2023 due to a bridge maintenance project. Bridge openings for marine traffic are suspended through April 2023. Two overnight bridge closures are scheduled from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 26-Monday, Feb. 27 and Tuesday, March 7-Wednesday, March 8.

Northumberland County

 

Route 605 (Balls Neck Road)

Balls Neck Road is closed to through traffic at the bridge over Mill Creek for bridge repair. The road will remain closed through early April 2023. Click here to view online detour map.

Richmond County

Route 637 (County Bridge Road)

County Bridge Road is closed to through traffic at the bridge over Cat Point Creek due to damage following heavy rain and flooding in summer 2021. A bridge replacement is under construction. County Bridge Road will remain closed to through traffic until the new bridge reopens by April 26, 2024.

Spotsylvania County

Route 1 and Commonwealth Drive

Be alert for construction activity on Route 1 near the Commonwealth Drive intersection, where work is underway to build a nearly 700-space Park & Ride commuter lot. Be alert for work zone barriers along the shoulders of Route 1, and for lanes shifted east near the Commonwealth Drive intersection. Project completion is anticipated in May 2023.

 

Route 17 (Mills Drive) Overpass Replacement and Widening

Construction started in Dec. 2020 to replace the existing two-lane interstate overpass on Route 17 with a four-lane bridge. Route 17 will be widened to four lanes until just east of the Hospital Boulevard/Germanna Point Drive intersection. Sidewalk, a shared-use path, and pedestrian crossing equipment will be added as part of the project. Improvements will be completed in Feb. 2024.

 

Westmoreland County

Route 658 (Monroe Bay Circle)

Route 658 (Monroe Bay Circle) closed to through traffic near Stoney Knoll on Dec. 22, 2022. The road was closed for motorist safety after a hole formed in the road, following a pipe failure at the crossing of Monroe Creek. A detour is posted along Route 1300 (Shore Drive) to Route 1308 (Rolando Drive) to Route 633 (Holly Vista Drive) to Route 628 (Stoney Knoll). The detour will remain in place until the road can be temporarily reopened. Installation of a temporary, single-lane bridge is planned, and once complete the road will reopen by late March 2023. The temporary bridge is a short-term solution until a permanent, long-term project can be advanced.
