Okra, “the much maligned vegetable,” will be featured in Johnny Johnson’s latest exhibit at Art First Gallery in downtown Fredericksburg.

“Okra and More” will be on display 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. Wednesday, June 1, through Monday, June 27. An opening reception will be held from 6 – 9 p.m. on First Friday, June 3, 2016

Okra triggers reflections on childhood, on heritage, and on history in these latest works, the renowned Fredericksburg artist said. Even dried okra seeds and pods, collected for years in anticipation of this show, add texture to some paintings.

In 1959, Johnny moved to Fredericksburg to teach art. He is an original member of Art First, the city’s oldest cooperative gallery, formed in 1992. His portfolio of thousands of figurative, realistic and abstract paintings spans 60 years, and is collected and exhibited worldwide. He continues to find diverse and innovative ways to share his lifelong passion for art.

Art First Gallery is located at 824 Caroline St. in Fredericksburg. For additional information about the artist, visit www.johnnypjohnson.com or www.artfirstgallery.com or call the gallery at 540-371-7107.
