Friends of the Rappahannock (FOR), Piedmont Environmental Council, and John Marshall Soil and Water Conservation District will host the third annual From the Rappahannock, For the Rappahannock event in Hume, Virginia, on Sunday, April 9, 2017.

From the Rappahannock, For the Rappahannock is a celebration of land and water conservation in the Rappahannock River watershed and the partnerships that help us succeed.

The event is designed to showcase the organizations, partnerships, projects, and programs operating in the headwaters of the Rappahannock River watershed that foster conservation and protect water quality.

For several years, Marriott Ranch has volunteered to protect the water resources on their property and improve the health of their cattle through conservation best management practices, which provide an excellent opportunity to showcase conservation.

Beginning at 9 a.m., partners will be working with volunteers to plant trees and other vegetation in a riparian buffer along a stretch of a Rappahannock River tributary called Fiery Run. This conservation best management practice will provide wildlife habitat, decrease erosion and sedimentation, and help improve water quality.

The event will begin at 1 p.m. at the Marriott Pavilion, with food, drink, and activities. Tickets are $35, and children under 14 are welcome at no charge.

We will have Rappahannock River oysters from the Oyster Company of Virginia, catered barbecue from Marriott Ranch, local wines and beers from the Piedmont region, live music, hay ride tours of the property and conservation practices, fish shocking demonstrations from Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (DGIF), and more!

Staff from a variety of conservation organizations will be available to answer questions and talk about local and regional environmental issues, land conservation, riparian buffers, and cost share programs available in the region.

“This is an excellent way to experience the headwaters of the Rappahannock River and see first hand that what happens up stream has a direct impact on down stream communities” said Richard Moncure, FOR River Steward.

Come spend a day with conservation groups in the mountains to celebrate another year of great work to protect the Rappahannock River.

Marriott Ranch is at 5305 Marriott Lane, in Hume.
